Robert Plonka

Robert Plonka has had a lifetime passion for photography. Now retired, he takes this passion very seriously and goes on long photo-shooting sessions throughout the city of Detroit, day or night, snow or sun. He also has a studio at the Russell Industrial Center where he concentrates on improving his technique with staged scenes or models. His subjects range from cityscapes, to still-lives and portraits. Photographing people in their environments is something he enjoys because he is curious of what lays behind their eyes, where they have been and where they hope to go.

His objective goes far beyond pure esthetics. He aims at capturing the specific emotion he had when taking the photograph and takes advantage of the circumstances to compose a unique image without trying to create at all costs the perfect postcard. His photographs are the expression of what he sees and feels through the viewfinder. Pictures can be found anywhere. It’s simply a matter of noticing things and caring about what’s around. Once the photograph is taken, his artistic process is far from being finished. It continues for hours in his studio.
