Birgit was exposed to art at a very young age, in the studio of her uncle Werner Holz, an outstanding German artist. Intrigued by the contradictions of the human psyche, she first started to write poetry and studied literature, philosophy as well as media in Germany. A sudden move to the US triggered an end to her writings. It wasn’t long before she discovered the ancient Greek practice of encaustic painting. Encaustic painting involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. Birgit is now recognized as one of North America’s best encaustic artists and has exhibited her work in international and national galleries.
